Rooted in the charm and ingenuity of mid-century furniture, the Clive Gossip Bench revives an object once designed around one of life’s simplest rituals: sitting down to chat it up on the phone. Before phones lived in our pockets, a telephone had a place in the home, attached to the wall with a coiled cord. The gossip bench gave it one. Clive balances craftsmanship with a little bit of irreverence. Its sculptural proportions and unexpected combination of seating, storage, and surface make it as useful as it is distinctive. The design draws inspiration from Chippy Heath’s telephone furniture of 1950s–1970s England, while departing from its utilitarian origins of the form. The finished product is unmistakably Last Ditch Design: nostalgic without being precious, functional without being ordinary, and designed with enough personality to become part of the conversation.
